Can HVAC Systems Spread COVID-19?
Due to the constantly changing and evolving guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and other world health organizations, it’s difficult to definitively say whether your HVAC system plays a role in COVID-19 transmission. Currently, the CDC says that the virus is primarily spread between people via respiratory droplets that are produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, sings, etc. If the infected person is near others, the droplets can land in the mouths and/or noses of nearby individuals and then be inhaled.
It’s unclear how long the virus can last in the air, so it’s possible that these infected droplets could also be dispersed through an HVAC system and spread to other building occupants, but this has not been officially documented yet. If you prefer to take a more cautious approach, it might be a good idea to have your HVAC system cleaned and serviced if you or anyone else in your home has been sick.

The Importance of HVAC Maintenance During COVID-19
COVID-19 research is developing daily, and in all current reports on transmission scenarios, there are no documented cases of space-to-space transmission via an HVAC system. The current scientific consensus is that it’s unlikely that the virus can be picked up at an HVAC return, travel through the air handling unit and the filters, and infect someone at a distance. Based on this understanding, there isn’t any documented reason to consider your heating or air condition system to be an infection risk.
It is true, however, that HVAC systems move air around within your home, because that’s how they condition the air, and this circulation has the potential to spread contaminants. Most HVAC systems also provide ventilation and filtration, which can help to reduce the risk of transmission, especially if they are clean and well-maintained. Now, more than ever, it’s important to stay current with your HVAC system’s annual maintenance and cleaning schedule.
