EPA 608 – Government issued certification. Technicians are required to pass an EPA-approved test specific to the type of equipment the technician seeks to work on. Tests are administered by an EPA-approved certifying organization.

NATE – The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification is the gold standard for technicians. This is a nationally recognized and respected certification that, while not legally required, is highly recommended for any technician working in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC) industry. To obtain this certification, a technician must pass a knowledge-based exam developed and administered by industry experts that illustrates they are better prepared for the workforce and more adept at handling difficult scenarios which in turn yield better results for their customers and the equipment they’re serving/servicing.

AC Check – Technicians are trained to perform an Airflow and Charge (AC), which is a testing procedure that verifies that central air conditioning and heat pump systems are commissioned properly and in good running condition. Systems that are properly commissioned have improved efficiency, and create increased comfort and savings for homeowners. The AC Check testing procedure ensures proper installation and operation of equipment and systems, and further, AC Check trained contractors can access incentives, training, and special offers for their residential customers. So, in short, with this certification in hand, we can save you maximum dollars on your HVAC investment (while making sure your system is saving you maximum dollars on your utility bills).

Did you notice the ground this morning? In many places around Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire there was a layer of frost, and even a thin coating of snow covering the grass we just spent the summer lounging in. And, while both of these elements will likely be gone by lunchtime, it’s still a reminder that Mother Nature rests for no one. Winter is coming. And with it, seasonal distresses like coughs, colds, and sniffles.

While we’re on the subject, have you thought about the health of your heating and cooling environment? It’s important. Its health is a direct link to you and your family’s health. So, that said, here are a few important things to take action on before the sky opens and the snow really starts to accumulate:

  • Clean the vents and tidy up around any outdoor piece of your unit. Debris – like leaves, grass clippings, twigs, etc. – can really build up in your HVAC unit during the dusty summer months. While you’re at it, take a quick look at the vents for any dirty buildup and vacuum them out to ensure proper airflow to prevent the circulation of dust and other airborne toxins in your home.
  • Change the air filter. Seriously. You change the one in your car (at least we hope you do), so why not change the one that is servicing your home? It’s easy and your HVAC unit running at an optimal level. Like the function of any filter, when it’s clogged it’s clogged. And when clogs happen, the entire system gets bogged down causing harder, unnecessary strain on your investment. This quick fix is also an element of your maintenance service contract if you’d prefer a professional to handle the matter…
  • Check and set your thermostat accordingly. If your thermostat is programmable, make sure you adjust it for the cooler months. If your thermostat isn’t programmable, keep in mind that it’s 2017 and such technology is extremely affordable, easily installed, and instantly saves you money and unnecessary energy usage. Program it by hours of the day, days of the week, times of the year… There are so many variables you can adjust for. In doing this, you’re proactively making sure your furnace isn’t working unnecessarily hard when it doesn’t have to. Not only does this extend the life of your system, it will save you serious coin on energy bills as well.

And while some of the things we just mentioned are things you can conceivably do yourself, there is also maintenance you’re better off leaving to the professionals like us at Suburban Companies. Having your friendly, experienced neighborhood HVAC professional from Suburban come out to your home to perform maintenance once or twice a year, will have much benefit to you and your system as the years stack up. Having maintenance done at the beginning of each season is key to ensuring that your system will run safely and smoothly all year long. Energy Efficiency During the Frigid Winter Months

Here in Massachusetts we’re staring at a string of days that won’t even register on the positive side of the Fahrenheit thermometer. That’s cold. As you assess where you’re at as the winter plods along, we thought we’d throw out a dozen tips to help you keep your energy consumption as efficient as it can possible be. Heat is expensive. Maximize what you get out of the energy you’re producing under your roof – be it at home or at the office.

Lower your thermostat – Sounds crazy as we start to pile the blankets on the bed, but, give it a shot… A decrease of 4 °F could save you as much as 4% on your heating bill. Who couldn’t use a little more green in their pocket? Invest in a sweater and demand more out that thermostat!

Lay down a rug – Do it. You’ll not only help insulate your floors, but you’ll cut down on noise too. Cozier on myriad fronts…

Check your filters – We know, we know. We harp on this a lot. Hey, we wouldn’t have to if you’d just commit to a carefree maintenance plan… Checking the filters on a monthly basis during the winter months will help keep your heating environment “honest,” well maintained, and will reduce energy consumption which could save you up to 5% percent on your heating costs.

Don’t block air vents – Seems obvious, be we’ve learned that it isn’t. Keep supply and return air vents clear of furniture and appliances so your heating system can work more efficiently. Do you sleep with a pillow over your face? No, of course you don’t. You’ve got to breathe to make the next day a viable option. Same is true with your heating system. Let it breathe.

Don’t heat unnecessary places – Avoid heating areas of your home that are not insulated, such as a garage, crawlspaces, attic, or storage sheds. Further, installing a “smart” programmable thermostat allows you to manage the heating of multiple areas of your home or office, saving you up to 10% on your energy bill.

Purchase a well-insulated door – Unless you already have one. Or perhaps bolster the insulation on your current mode of entrance. To check if a door provides good insulation, place your hand against it from the inside. If it feels cooler than the inside walls, it might be time to install a door that’s better insulated. Install fully insulated doors on all entrances to garages, cold storage rooms and un-insulated basements. Also, think about your windows too. We’ll save you line item; it’s very much in tune to what we’re talking about here with doors.

Try a tune-up – Have we mentioned our maintenance plans? Not ready to replace your heating system? A regular tune-up can save 3 to 10% on your next heating bill.

Measure your attic’s insulation thickness – You’re greatest combatant to lost heating energy is in the way you insulate your building. To find out if you have enough attic insulation, measure its thickness. If there is less than 7 inches of fiberglass / rock wool or 6 inches of cellulose you could probably benefit by adding more. And while you’re up there, consider installing some roof vents and inlets to improve ventilation. 

Heat your home (or office) responsibly – This harkens back to the smart thermostat we referenced above. With a proper, technologically advanced thermostat, you won’t even need to worry about the sentiment of this entry.

Here’s the skinny: Cranking up the heat to warm your dwelling quickly doesn’t work. It will warm up at the same rate, regardless of the temperature setting. All you’re doing is taxing your heating system.

Enjoy the sun – Open the drapes or blinds on sunny days and bask in the “free” heat. Keep those south-facing windows squeaky clean to let the light through. All this said, remember to close the drapes or blinds when the sun sets. You know why.

Try a humidifier for extra heat – Not only does a humidifier add a little bit of relief to the painfully dry air that chaps skin and bothers the lungs, it also allows you to turn your thermostat down and be comfortable at lower temperatures. The heat gets stuck in the “water” in the air – which, in this case, is a good thing. We’ll talk about air conditioning in the summertime when humidity is naturally oppressive…

Close the garage door to trap heat – Another “seems obvious” piece of advice, but, we make a lot of house calls, and we know a lot of you are just leaving those doors wide open. It’s fine (generally speaking) in the summertime, but during the winter months, keep the garage door tightly closed as often as possible so that you might retain warmer air against the garage-side wall of the house, which will act as a buffer against the colder outdoor air.

It’s going to be cold this winter. We’re coming off of one of the warmest winters in our history, so, this year will make up for the “comfort” we had last year. We expect it to be cold, wet, and, the combination of those two will undoubtedly yield a healthy amount of snow, and ice.

But, we’re not the weatherman, and we don’t deal with what your yard looks like. What we do is make sure the inside of your home is geared up and ready for total comfort indoors. Regardless of what’s happening outside, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Right?

Heating System Check

This is basically the name of the game when it comes to preparing yourself for winter. If you’ve been keeping up with what we’ve got going on, chances are, you’ve already called us and have a maintenance schedule in place. Right? If you haven’t, it’s not too late, but it’s time to take it seriously and be proactive. Nobody wants to get stuck without heat…

If you have, great!

In either case, we’ve provided you with a quick and simple checklist of subjects that you should be discussing with your general HVAC contractor.

These items may or may not be applicable to all heating systems – they’re totally dependent on the size and type of your system equipment. In any event, if you have any questions at all, we’re happy to answer them for you.

  • Look for cracks in the heat exchangers
  • Check the safety mechanism for proper operation
  • Check that the flames are burning clean and efficiently
  • Check the flues for carbon buildup and address if buildup exists
  • Check that water pressure gauges are calibrated correctly
  • Remove and clean burners to assure clean and efficient operation
  • Inspect the system’s expansion tanks for proper air cushions to be sure they are not flooded and able to perform their task correctly
  • Be sure to periodically brush the boiler tubes
  • Address thermostat calibration for efficient and effective operation
  • And of course, be sure to change the air filters so that your system can “breath” property

Optimizing the Cool: Accenting Your HVAC Equipment During the Hot Summer Months

Since we’re smack dab in the middle of summer, we’re going to focus on cooling for a moment. Keeping cool is essential during these long, sunshiny days, and there are ways to further exploit cooler temperatures indoors that help maximize the work that your HVAC unit is doing.

You ready?

Here we go:

Keep the shades drawn

Yeah, we know, it’s nice out, we like to look around at all the lush green grass and vegetation (flowers) that are coming to life and adding a whole bunch of natural beauty to the landscape outside our windows. And while we’re not trying to suggest you shouldn’t take in those sights, we are here to tell you that keeping the blinds/curtains pulled back is heating up the interior of your home or office. We all know that when we’re outside and looking to shave off a degree or two of oppressive heat hitting us from the sun, we seek shade. The same sentiment is true indoors. Creating shade by drawing the, well, shades, is going to drop the internal temperature naturally.

Check the location of your thermostat

If you had your system installed by one of our certified and trusted professionals, you need not worry about this one, but, reality is, this is not the case with everyone reading this… (but hey, contact us if you need information on a new system or need to schedule routine maintenance/service).

Make sure your thermostat isn’t located directly next to a window. Why? Well, quite simply, if you don’t have those (aforementioned) shades drawn (or even if you do), the heat that permeates from your window is going to trigger a warmer response within the operative makeup of your thermostat and “tell it” to turn on and cool things down. Your house may not actually be as warm as what is being read by your thermostat if it’s directly next to the window. Pick a wall that’s at a more centralized position within the room. It’ll make a big difference.

Don’t toss the fan

Listen, we know you’re excited. You’ve got an HVAC system that’s slated to cool the whole house and/or office. And, for all intents and purposes, it will. Some of us get so excited that we ditch the fan (or, let’s be honest, fans – plural) for good. “What do I need it for?” Hey, we get it. It seems like a useless appliance. But that fan, be it a window fan, an standing oscillating unit, or a ceiling fan, can actually accentuate the work your HVAC is doing. If you’ve got a fan circulating on low, it’s going to make the environment around you feel a solid 10 degrees cooler, and, to be completely transparent, a fan uses about 10% of the energy an HVAC unit is going to use. So don’t treat the fan like an inferior part of the family – let it do its thing. The benefits are vast.

The lower the temp, the higher the price

Again, we know you’re excited. So are we. We love installing a new HVAC system for a customer and seeing the look on their face when the initial “fire up” phase kicks in and their home or office is all of a sudden the most comfortable place on earth. We know the feeling. We thrive off of that feeling and reaction. As we mentioned at the start, we take great pride in delivering ultimate comfort. Here’s the skinny, don’t just set the thing on arctic temperatures and assume your going to save a trunkful of cash. There’s saving to be had, for sure, but listen, the lower you set the thermostat the more it’s going to cost you. Keep that in mind. We’re not telling you you shouldn’t, we’re just merely stating that you’ll save more the higher you get up the ticker on the thermostat (when it comes to cooling – heating is an entirely different subject).

In short: set your thermostat to the highest temperature you can stand in the summer months to keep the most coin in your wallet. You can save around 10% (we know, we keep dropping the 10-figure everywhere in this thing…) a year by setting your thermostat 10-15 degrees higher for approximately 8 hours each day. If you’ve got a smart thermostat, you can automatically adjust the temperature of your home or office depending on what time of day it is and how much use a space gets as it pertains to those specific times. You Get What You Pay For: Invest in the Health of Your HVAC System

When was the last time you had dental work done? Do you remember? Did you call around looking for the lowest quote?

Probably not.

You probably did more research that fell in line with qualifications and “quality” over keeping your cost as low as possible.

Do you remember the last time you needed to take your pet to the vet for an emergency situation? Did you call around to the vets in your area to find the cheapest price?

Of course not.

What good is a $69 tune-up if it isn’t addressing all the proper needs your system requires to ensure its life hasn’t just been cut by 25-50%? A new system is a whole lot more than a maintenance fee… The idea of maintenance isn’t a “one size fits all” type of equation.

Here’s the thing:

When it comes to your HVAC system, there really isn’t an immediate indication that an install or service was done properly. At least not to the common user/owner.

Have we ever told you how much we enjoy working for our customers? If it wasn’t for our customers we wouldn’t be where we’re at, and we owe a great debt of gratitude to everyone that has enabled us to have been around providing the best HVAC product installation and maintenance services since 1963. Dear Mr. Vito,

Suburban Companies recently completed the installation of a new boiler and domestic hot water heating system at Trinity Church. The new boiler replaced the original 1960s-era boiler that was well beyond its expected life span. The new system had to meet several requirements and challenges:

  • Be affordable
  • Provide reliable heat and hot water
  • Be installed in a tight timeframe such that the church’s preschool would not have to be closed
  • And – most of all – be installed before the old boiler stopped working

One month after the startup of our new system, we can say that all of these criteria have been met. Additionally, all of the personnel at Suburban were extremely professional and were available to work with the Trinity’s Building and Grounds Committee throughout the course of the project.

We worked initially with your sales representative, Brian. Brian was an excellent liaison between Trinity and Suburban. His helpfulness included:

  • Inviting us to tour your facility in Westwood
  • Introducing us to your staff
  • Continuing as an always available point-of-contact right through to the final project handoff meeting

Your lead installer, Sean, installed a very impressive high-efficiency modern boiler that has run smoothly from day one. Sean is obviously extremely knowledgeable, personable, and was willing to walk us through the installation of the system. The work by Sean and his onsite team was done on time and neatly. Sean took the time and effort to make sure that details that make the difference between an average project and a superior project were included. The end result is a system that all can see was installed with thoughtfulness and pride.

As summer fast approaches, home and business owners everywhere will be reaching for the controls to the air conditioner portion of their respective heating and cooling system. Right? Right.

Part of that maintenance, especially at this time of year, will be the proper cleaning of the coils that literally “fuel the cool” in your home or office. This is imperative the efficient operative function of your HVAC system – Especially if you live in a more metro area like Boston for instance. The higher amount of potential contaminants in the air, the more buildup is likely to have accumulated on the coils of your air conditioning apparatus.

  1. Evaporator coils. The evaporator coils are located in the indoor portion of the cooling solution and are responsible for “absorbing” heat from your home or office’s air and transferring it to the refrigerant element that carries it out of your home.
  2. Condenser coils. The condenser coils are typically located in the outdoor portion of your air conditioner. The condenser coils are responsible for “dumping the heat from the refrigerant element to the air outside.

To a large degree, the coils contained in your HVAC system are tucked inside the system, and, to be honest, are difficult to effectively access and clean on your own. And if you’re a business owner (or manager), you don’t want to be tinkering around with the HVAC system while you should be focusing on other aspects of the business. That’s why we’re here. In the commercial, corporate world, the workplace is ruled by budgets, which are passed down through the ranks. “Budgetary constraints,” “budgetary cuts,” “not in the budget,” “maybe next year,” are all commonly spewed phrases when it comes to the prospect of expenditures at work.

This isn’t a revelation. It’s reality.

That said, when budget planning meetings commence, an area that might be left neglected is an area directly related to the comfort and productivity of an organization, which is to say, it’s time to pay closer attention and make sure that this little operative piece of the business is taken a bit more seriously.

That area of focus, of course, is the property’s heating and cooling environment. You know, the HVAC system. You might find yourself fooling with the thermostat from time-to-time to achieve an ideal (comfortable) temperature. Where do you think that environmental conditioning is coming from?

Why bother doing commercial HVAC maintenance?

It’s a good question. After all, you don’t necessarily see the equipment that’s keeping things comfortable in the workplace, so why does it matter if it continues to get ignored for a few years?

That’s the wrong attitude.

Think of your HVAC environment like a car. Do you change your oil regularly? Do you keep the fluids full (you know, coolant, steering fluid, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid, etc.)? Do you get an annual checkup? Of course you do (the latter is known as an inspection, and if you haven’t been getting one, you’ve likely accumulated a lot of fines…)

HVAC systems are a lot like cars. There’s a lot of moving pieces and parts, and eventually, things wear out. Like the tires on your car. If your tires are bare, you’re putting your vehicle, and yourself in harms way. It’s important to monitor the wear and keep things operating optimally. It’s an important investment. Many of us want our cars to last for as long as they possibly can. Without the aforementioned maintenance, your car may just very well give up prematurely and die on the side of the road. Same with your HVAC system. If you’re maintaining it properly, the typical commercial HVAC system should last you 15 – 20 long years. That’s a lot of comfort. Reliability

As mentioned, a lack of maintenance affects downtime and the lifetime of a system. For example, a clogged filter can stop a system from working and cause motors to overheat and prematurely fail. Failure is avoidable. And if you’re in the business of being proactive, you can certainly save a substantial amount on costly repairs keeping that system maintained and as reliable as it possibly can be.

Efficiency (Operating Cost)

The electrical cost of your HVAC system is higher when said system has to work harder. Improper refrigerant charge can cause a system to run longer than necessary. The age-old mantra applies: “work smarter, not harder.” When you install a system, part of the hope is that you’re saving money, and, in most cases, the implementation of a new HVAC system brings with it a 20-40% savings in emissions and cost savings. Safety

Typically halfway through the life of a HVAC system (10 years) heat exchangers have to be replaced. It’s not common knowledge, especially if you’re “ignoring” the existence of your heating and cooling environment. A cracked heat exchanger can emit Carbon Monoxide, which is odorless and harmful. A proper yearly visual inspection should be completed. Air quality in general is of great importance if you’re at all concerned with the wellbeing of the people residing under your roof.
